What is Phantom Energy?
You may ask what is phantom energy or ghost energy? Phantom energy use is the energy used by an appliance or machine while in the standby or idle mode. A perfect example is your computer or copier that appears to be off but really is not. Although, in standby less energy is consumed than under normal operating conditions, the machine is still consuming kilowatts which will convert to kilowatt hours (KWH) which is the unit of measure for electricity usage.
One might ask how much could it cost? Well if it were only one it probably would not add up to much. But in mass it is astronomical. Take one unit (computer) that draws 14 KW x 24 hours x 365 days per year = 122,640 KW divided by 1000 = 122.64 KWH x $.14 (cost of electricity) = $17.16 per year plus tax.
Again that does not seem like much. However, times that number by millions and you can see what happens. If two thirds of the day that computer is shut down you can see how much energy is saved and the related costs. When energy is not used, carbon emissions are less which is better for the environment.
Just as it is important to turn the lights off in a room when it is not occupied it is equally important to turn off those computers and other business machines when not in use. If you are in an office situation, one can install a plug load controller in cubicles to control multiple loads like monitors, task lights, adding machines and fans.
