Fossils Lot

Do you think that the CND supporters from the late 50s early 60s era have a lot to answer for.?
If it wasn’t for those ban the bombers/nuclear energy protesters, we could by now be self sufficient in energy, probably running our cars etc on nuclear power, and we would have stopped almost 40 years of fossil fuel burning creating a better environment with a lot less greenhouse gases. We also wouldn’t have the threat of our cities being under water.
The responders who distinguish nuclear power from nuclear weapons are making a distinction that most CND supporters did not accept, and that (until last year) the Green movement, which overlaps substantially with the nuclear disarmament movement, did not accept either. For most of these people, nuclear technology in any form was the enemy. “Nuclear power? No thanks!” was the message on their car stickers.
Up to a point they were of course right. Conventional chemistry can make cheap plastic chairs or napalm and plastic explosive. Blacksmiths can make horseshoes or plate armour. All technologies can be used for more than one purpose, and nuclear scientists were finding out how to build bombs and how to build power plants at the same time. It’s still a problem – look at Iran.
Personally, I broadly agree with you. CND, like the greens, are technophobic. It would have been far better to accept the technology in its peaceful form than to run like rabbits to engineering which was, even then, outdated and needlessly polluting.
As for the bombs, unfortunately they can’t be uninvented – and to do as CND demanded would have been to lay down our own weapons, leaving a loaded pistol in the hands of any enemies who wanted one.
CND? No thanks!
